Meet Karen
Karen Cavallaro
Karen was born and raised in Reno, Nevada. She became a dyslexia specialist out of sheer necessity when her son was diagnosed with dyslexia. The paucity of resources in Reno led her to become trained in Orton-Gillingham (OG) in 2008 and through word of mouth, she became one of the first tutors in the Reno area for dyslexia. Always striving to provide the most updated therapy to clients, she has spent over 300 hours learning about Structured Word Inquiry because many of her clients did not have the working memory that OG demands. She has a deep understanding of the science of reading, how the brain learns to read. Her understanding of the English language grew and it is through this understanding, evidence-based instruction, and her deep understanding of dyslexia, that she customizes instruction for each child that is simply not available in a boxed program.
Many of her clients also have an ADHD diagnosis and her compassion for these students and their families led her to coaching. Through effective strategies and outside supports she saw their quality of life and family dynamics improve over time.
She has also provided extensive advocacy work through Decoding Dyslexia, Nevada. She has also spent many hours with teachers in various local schools providing information on dyslexia, strategies to help, as well as training in the Science of Reading that has transformed an entire school.
